We are reading aloud the book, "The One and Only Ivan". See the blog post before this one. The kids are very into it! It is an endearing story written from a gorilla's point of view and is based on a real gorilla named Ivan. Ask your child about it!
We also have been reading some informational articles on Mountain Gorillas. (just like Ivan). We learned a bunch of facts about them and have written a short informational piece about gorillas. Today, we learned about writing a powerful topic sentence and practiced that. We have also been practicing how to annotate the text while reading. Annotating means to highlight important information and then write a word or phrase in the margins or on post-its. The kids have been working very hard and annotating is getting easier.
We are also talking about making inferences, main idea & details, and summarizing. The kids have a response folder that we write in to practice some of these skills.
Our binders are in full swing! We have been using the different sections and learning how to place papers in the right spot.
Please remember that reading logs are due each Friday. Click here to go the webpage to see all of the logs. A reminder too that a parent signature is required for each log. Your child is reading at school 15-20 minutes each day and should ALSO be reading at least 20 minutes at home. Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks for your continued support!
